Probably from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Arabic الْغَطَّاس (al-ḡaṭṭās, “the diver”). Not derived from modern Arabic الْقَطْرَس (al-qaṭras, “the albatross”), which is instead perhaps borrowed from Spanish.
