French[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From a- +‎ Middle French mesnagier; compare French ménager.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /a.me.na.ʒe/
  • (file)

Verb[edit]

aménager

  1. to lay out, fit out
  2. to develop, convert (to an intended use)

Conjugation[edit]

This is a regular -er verb, but the stem is written aménage- before endings that begin with -a- or -o- (to indicate that the -g- is a "soft" /ʒ/ and not a "hard" /ɡ/). This spelling-change occurs in all verbs in -ger, such as neiger and manger.
