Blend of Hispano-Celtic *agranio (sloe) (compare Aragonese arañon, Catalan aranyó) and Late Latin rodandarum, lorandrum, variants of Latin rhododendron, from Ancient Greek ῥοδόδενδρον (rhodódendron), from ῥόδον (rhódon, rose) + δένδρον (déndron, tree).
