Blend of Hispano-Celtic *agranio ‎(sloe) (compare Aragonese arañon, Catalan aranyó) and Late Latin rodandarum, lorandrum, variants of Latin rhododendron, from Ancient Greek ῥοδόδενδρον ‎(rhodódendron), from ῥόδον ‎(rhódon, rose) + δένδρον ‎(déndron, tree).
