Etymology[edit]
Suffix of arbeta (“work”) + -are (“-er”), inherited from Old Swedish arbeidare. Attested since the 15th century. Cognate with Danish arbejder, Dutch arbeider and German Arbeiter.
Insect sense; attested since 1860.
