From New Latin asphyxia, from Ancient Greek ἀσφυξία ‎(asphuxía, stopping of the pulse), ἀ- ‎(a-, not) + σφύξις ‎(sphúxis, pulse), from σφύζω ‎(sphúzō, I throb).
