Etymology

From Middle English asweven, from Old English āswefan (to put to sleep), equivalent to a- +‎ sweve, a word descended from Proto-Germanic *swefaną (to sleep). Related to sweven and sweb. Cognate with Danish sove (to sleep), Icelandic sofa (to sleep), Norwegian sove (to sleep), Swedish sova (to sleep).
