Etymology[edit]
Inherited from Ottoman Turkish آیدن آیه (aydan aya),[1] from آی (ay),[2] equivalent to ay (“the Moon; a month”) + -dan (ablative suffix) + ay + -a (dative suffix), literally “from month to month”.
