From Ottoman Turkish آیقری (aykırı), mispronunciation of آرقوری (arkurı, athwart, opposite). Related to arka and art, ultimately from Proto-Turkic *arka (back).

Cognate with Old Turkic [script needed] (arkuru, reverse, opposite).
