From Old Galician-Portuguese açoute (lash) (13th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria), from Andalusian Arabic, from Arabic ال (al-) + سَوْط (sawṭ, whip, cane). Cognate with Portuguese açoute and Spanish azote.
