Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰey-.[1] Germanic cognates include Old English bēo (English bee), Old Frisian bē (West Frisian bij), Old Saxon bīa (Middle Low German bīe), Dutch bij, Old High German bīa, bini (German Biene, dialectal Beie).
