From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] French baccalauréat, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Medieval Latin baccalaureatus, from baccalaureus, an alteration of baccalarius (“young man aspiring to knighthood”), to resemble bacca lauri (“laurel berry”) (the ancient symbol of victory).
