This word has begun to gain popular acceptance since appearing in the U.S. sitcoms Friends and Scrubs. An earlier example of its use was in an episode of the UK sitcom Coupling: "The Cupboard of Patrick's Love" (Series 1, episode 6, first aired 16th June 2000), the same year it was used on Ally McBeal.
