From Middle English *bernis, *barnisch, from Old English *bearnisc and Old Norse bernskr ‎(childish), from Proto-Germanic *barniskaz ‎(childish), equivalent to bairn +‎ -ish. Cognate with Gothic 𐌱𐌰𐍂𐌽𐌹𐍃𐌺𐍃 ‎(barnisks, childish).
