Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Albanian *bá(r)śtᵊkə, with r-loss before a fricative (see buzë) and postsynocopal simplification of the plosive cluster tᵊk > tk > k, from Pre-Proto-Albanian *bárśtukā-, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰórs-tu-kah₂- (mass of hair), collective of Proto-Indo-European *bʰorstu-kó- (hairy).[1]

An origin from Proto-Albanian *baskā, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰask- (bundle), is unlikely as the PIE *-sk- cluster would lead to Albanian -h-, not -shk- (*-sk- > *-hk- > *-kh- > *-kʰ- > -h-). The Proto-Albanian form itself would have been *bakʰā > *bahë.
