Etymology
Unknown. Perhaps from a substrate language;[1] otherwise from berbecho (“cockle; goatee”), from a local Vulgar Latin *berbēcclus < *berbēciclus, a diminutive of Latin berbēx ("ram", compare Galician carneiro (“warty venus ((Lua error in Module:taxlink at line 68: Parameter "ver" is not used by this template.); cockle”, literally “ram”))). In any case, related to Portuguese berbigão.
