Borrowed from Arabic بَاذِنْجَان (bāḏinjān), from Persian بادنجان (bâdenjân), from Sanskrit भण्टाकी (bhaṇṭākī, aubergine). Sanskrit word is likely of Dravidian origin. Compare Galician berinxela, berenxena and Spanish berenjena.
