Inherited from Old Polish bielizna, from Proto-Slavic *bělizna. By surface analysis, biel +‎ -izna. Compare Russian бельё (belʹjó) (whence Bulgarian бельо (beljo)). Also compare Hungarian fehérnemű, German Weißwaren, and English tighty whities or whites.
