From Proto-Germanic *braidaz, whence also Old English brād (English broad), Old Frisian brēd (West Frisian breed), Old Saxon brēd (Low German breed, breet), Dutch breed, Old High German breit (German breit), Gothic 𐌱𐍂𐌰𐌹𐌸𐍃 (braiþs).
