From Proto-Slavic *bridъkъ (sharp). Cognate with Polish brzydki (ugly), Czech břitký (cutting, sharp), Serbo-Croatian brȉdak (cutting, sharp), and Ukrainian бридки́й (brydkýj, disgusting, ugly).
