From *bur, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰrenu̯, present stem from *bʰreu-, *bʰru-. Compare Middle Irish bréo ‎(flame), Sanskrit भुरति ‎(bhurati, moves quickly, twitches, fidgets), Old English byrnan, beornan 'to burn'.
