Borrowed from Italian campione (cf. also French champion)[1], from Medieval Latin or Late Latin campiō, campiōnem (champion, fighter), from Frankish *kampijō (or a Lombardic equivalent) from Proto-Germanic *kampijô, based on Latin campus (level ground).
