- A stratum containing a characteristic association of minerals and microfossils.
- 1965, Herbert Edgar Wright, David Grover Frey, International Studies on the Quaternary, page 145:
- Because of this I have proposed (Ruggieri, 1961) a lower cenozone for the Pleistocene characterized by the presence of A. islandica but by the absence of H. balthica.
