Etymology[edit]

From Old Galician-Portuguese souriço, attested as such in the thirteenth century. Its phonological shape suggests a Vulgar Latin *saurīcium, of uncertain origin.[1] Cognate with Galician chourizo. Spanish chorizo is likely borrowed from the latter or from Portuguese.[2]
