From Proto-Germanic *klajjaz, from Proto-Germanic *kli- (“to stick, cleave”), from Proto-Indo-European *gley- (“to stick”). Cognate with Middle Low German klei (Dutch klei, German Klei). Compare also Ancient Greek γλία (glía), Latin glūs (“glue”), Old Church Slavonic глина (glina, “clay”).
