Etymology

From Proto-Germanic *klajjaz, from Proto-Germanic *kli- (to stick, cleave), from Proto-Indo-European *gley- (to stick). Cognate with Middle Low German klei (Dutch klei, German Klei). Compare also Ancient Greek γλία (glía), Latin glūs (glue), Old Church Slavonic глина (glina, clay).
