Romanian

Etymology

[edit]

Uncertain. Probably a substratum word.[1] Other theories include a Vulgar Latin root *curtiāre (cut), from Latin curtāre, or a *cruciāre (cross), from crux or a *curatiāre; alternatively, there may be a connection with Slavic *krotiti (compare ocroti). Compare also the likely related Albanian kursej (save, save up, spare, put aside).
