Old English[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Origin Uncertain. Perhaps from Proto-West Germanic *kūpijā (bucket), diminutive of Proto-West Germanic *kūpu (tub, vat).
Alternatively, from Proto-West Germanic *kīpā, from Proto-Germanic *kīpǭ, *kippǭ (basket), from Proto-Indo-European *gey- (to bend, twist); related to Middle Dutch kiepe (basket), Middle Low German kîpe (basket), Old Norse kippa (basket). Compare also Norwegian kaup (crate, wooden box).

  • The exact gender is unknown, as the word is attested in the oblique singular and plural forms only. The nominative singular may be either cȳpe f or cȳpa m.
