Etymology

From Proto-Slavic *čьstь (honour), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kʷit-tis. Cognate with Sanskrit चित्ति (citti, thinking, understanding) and Avestan 𐬗𐬌𐬯𐬙𐬌- (cisti-, consciousness). Compare Czech čest, Ukrainian and Russian честь (čestʹ), Serbo-Croatian and Slovene čast, Belarusian чэсць (čescʹ), Slovak česť, Bulgarian чест (čest).
