Etymology

[edit]

    From dé- +‎ coudre.

    Pronunciation

    [edit]

    Verb

    [edit]

    découdre

    1. (transitive) to unsew, unstitch (remove the stitches from something that is sewn)
    2. (intransitive, with en) to do battle
      Synonyms: battre, lutte
      Il faut en découdre.
      We must do battle.

    Conjugation

    [edit]

This verb is conjugated like coudre. That means it is conjugated like rendre, except that its stem is découd- in only part of the conjugation. Before endings that begin with vowels, the stem décous- (with a /-z-/ sound) is used instead; for example, nous décousons, not *nous découdons.
