Etymology
Coined by Russian writer Grigorij Aleksinskij as calque of Russian пораженец (poraženec).[1][2] Also coined by him as a derivation of поражение (poraženije, “defeat”). Surface analysis: défaite (“defeat”) + -iste (“-ist”).
