Etymology

Coined by Russian writer Grigorij Aleksinskij as calque of Russian пораженец (poraženec).[1][2] Also coined by him as a derivation of поражение (poraženije, defeat). Surface analysis: défaite (defeat) +‎ -iste (-ist).
