Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Middle French democratique (relating to democracy, democratic), learned borrowing from Late Latin democraticus (relating to democracy, democratic; democrat), from Ancient Greek δημοκρᾰτῐκός (dēmokrătĭkós, of or for democracy; favouring or suited for democracy), from δημοκρᾰτῐ́ᾱ (dēmokrătĭ́ā, democracy) + -ῐκός (-ĭkós, suffix with the sense ‘relating’ to forming adjectives). The French word is analysable as démocratie +‎ -ique.
