From dë- +‎ boj, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰegʷ- (to run). Compare Ancient Greek φέβομαι (phébomai, flee, be afraid), φόβος (phóbos, escape, fear), Lithuanian bėgu (run, flee), Latvian bêgu (flee), Old Church Slavonic бѣгати (běgati, flee).
