From Proto-Slavic *dětę, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰeh₁- (to suckle, suck). Cognate with Lower Sorbian źiśe, Polish dziecię, Czech dítě, Old Church Slavonic дѣтѧ (dětę), and Russian дитя (ditja).
