Contraction of di hulu, from di (at, in, on) +‎ hulu (head, upstream, beginning) with the vowel adjacent to /h/ in the penultimate syllable regularly neutralised to /a/. Compare Toba Batak jolo (before).[1] Doublet of dulu.
