Etymology

From Middle English dethbed, from Old English dēaþbed, dēaþbedd (deathbed; grave), equivalent to death +‎ bed. Cognate with Swedish dödsbädd (deathbed). Compare also Dutch sterfbed (deathbed), German Sterbebett and Totenbett (both “deathbed”), Danish dødsleje (deathbed).
