From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle English *deerhound, *deerehund, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old English *dēorhund (attested in hēahdēorhund (stag-hound, deer-hound, a dog for hunting great game)), equivalent to deer +‎ hound.
