Based on Ancient Greek δῆμος (dêmos, people) +‎ -cide.

  1. (Mass) murder of people by a government which has power over them.

Usage notes[edit]

  • Despite its technically narrower meaning, genocide is often used to convey the meaning meant by democide (i.e. the murder of people irrespective of race, ethnicity etc.).
