Derived from a Vulgar Latin root *discalceus, itself either from a shortening of Latin discalceātus, or from dis- + calceus. Compare Friulian discolç, Italian scalzo, Spanish descalzo, Portuguese descalço, Catalan descalç, French déchaux, Romanian desculț, Neapolitan scauzo, Sicilian scàusu, Corsican scalzu; from a related Vulgar Latin root.
