Etymology

Uncertain. One proposed etymology was a Vulgar Latin *disfabicāre. It is more likely linked to or derived from Romanian înșfăca. Cf. also Aromanian dizvoc, dizvucari (“tear to shreds, delapidate, wreck”), which may or may not be related. See also the rare and dialectal Romanian dezvoca, which may be a variant of this word, and see also dehoca.
