From Proto-Germanic *deupaz, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰewb-. Cognate with Old English dēop (English deep), Old Frisian diāp (West Frisian djip), Old Saxon diop (Low German deep), Dutch diep, Old High German tiuf (German tief), Gothic 𐌳𐌹𐌿𐍀𐍃 (diups).
