Etymology

Lua error: The template Template:PIE root does not use the parameter(s):

Please see Module:checkparams for help with this warning.

(deprecated template usage)

From Proto-Germanic *dreuganą. Cognate with Gothic 𐌳𐍂𐌹𐌿𐌲𐌰𐌽 (driugan, do military service), Old English drēogan and Old Norse drýgja (perform, practise).

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈdriɒɣɑn/
  • Possibly IPA(key): /ˈdrioɣɑn/, but the spelling with ⟨io⟩ is comparably rare, so that it is not certain whether it might merely be a spelling convention copied from Old Dutch and Old High German or indeed an older stage of the language.

Verb

driogan

  1. to suffer, undergo, endure
