From a Vulgar Latin root *doliōsus, ultimately from Latin dolor or doleō. Compare Italian doglioso, Friulian duliôs. Also possibly from an unattested, lost Romanian word *doi, from Vulgar Latin *dolium, from Latin cordolium.
