From Old Irish asna, esna (compare Scottish Gaelic asna), from Proto-Celtic [Term?] (compare Welsh ais (“ribs”)), from pre-Celtic *astonyo-, *h₂estnijo, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂óst (compare Latin os, Albanian asht).
