From late Old Norse edik, from Middle Low German etik or Middle Dutch edik, ultimately borrowed (with metathesis) from Latin acētum. Compare Norwegian Bokmål eddik, Swedish ättika, Faroese edikur, Icelandic edik, West Frisian jittik, Old English æced, German Essig.
