From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] New Latin encyclopaedia, a false rendering of (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Ancient Greek ἔγκυκλος (énkuklos, circular), from ἐν (en, in) + κύκλος (kúklos, circle), + παιδεία (paideía, education, literally rearing of a child), as “an all-around education”, but literally “training in a circle”. The modern sense was first applied to the French Encyclopédie in the 17th century.
