Etymology[edit]

From New Latin encyclopaedia, a false rendering of Ancient Greek ἔγκυκλος ‎(énkuklos, circular), from ἐν ‎(en, in) + κύκλος ‎(kúklos , circle), + παιδεία ‎(paideía, educaiton, literally rearing of a child), as “an all-around education”, but literally “training in a circle”. The modern sense was first applied to the French Encyclopédie in the 17th century.
