Etymology[edit]

Via other European languages (e.g., French épithète), ultimately a borrowing from Ancient Greek ἐπίθετον(epítheton, adjective), the neuter of ἐπίθετος(epíthetos, attributed, added), from ἐπιτιθέναι(epitithénai, to add on).
