Albanian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Origin disputed. Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *er- 'earth'. Compare Ancient Greek ἔρᾱ ‎(érā, earth), Old High German ero, Armenian erkir ‎(erkir), Gothic aírÞa ‎(aírÞa) 'earth'. For sense development compare Armenian erkir ‎(erkir) 'earth' after erkin ‎(erkin) 'sky, heaven'. Alternatively from Latin aere 'air', although this is uncertain as this word is already reflected in Albanian ajër.
