English[edit]

Noun[edit]

eudesmane (countable and uncountable, plural eudesmanes)

  1. (organic chemistry) A bicyclic sesquiterpene found in many nonflowering plants, especially angiosperms, and often associated with drimane. It is considered a marker of plant-based origin for petroleum and sediments.
    • 2010, Marco Vecoli, Gaël Clément, B. Meyer-Berthaud, The Terrestrialization Process, page 18:
Among the sesquiterpenoids, eudesmane and cadinanes are the most important for the study of terrestrialization.
    • 2012, Yoshinori Asakawa, Agnieszka Ludwiczuk, Fumihiro Nagashima, Chemical Constituents of Bryophytes, page 222:
It seems reasonable to conclude that C. polyanthos collected in different locations possesses different sets of enzymes that act in mediating the cyclization process of the germacradiene intermediate leading to the eudesmanes.
