Etymology

From Middle English faderly, faderlich, from Old English fæderlīċ (fatherly, paternal), from Proto-Germanic *fadurlīkaz (fatherly, paternal), equivalent to father +‎ -ly. Cognate with West Frisian faderlik (fatherly), Dutch vaderlijk (fatherly), German väterlich (fatherly), Danish faderlig (fatherly), Swedish faderlig (fatherly), Icelandic föðurlegur (fatherly).
