From Latin fēmina, from Proto-Italic *fēmanā, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰeh₁m̥h₁néh₂((the one) nursing, breastfeeding), the feminine mediopassive participle of *dʰeh₁(y)-(to suck, suckle). Cognate with Portuguese fêmea, Spanish hembra, French femme.
